8270916812_1a50905308_zWe’ve all heard and probably even uttered “I’ll believe it when I see it!”

But, what if…

you had to believe it to see it?

In The Intention Experiment: Using Your Thoughts to Change Your Life and the World, Lynne McTaggart writes:

A sizable body of research exploring the nature of consciousness, carried on for more than thirty years in prestigious scientific institutions around the world, shows that thoughts are capable of affecting everything from the simplest machines to the most complex living beings.  This evidence suggests that human thoughts and intentions are an actual physical “something” with astonishing power to change our world. Every thought we have is tangible energy with the power to transform. A thought is not only a thing; a thought is a thing that influences other things.”

Thoughts influence other things

It’s been well documented that directed thoughts can affect a person’s own body in numerous ways.  But did you know that thoughts have been shown to alter some biological processes in another person including gross motor movements, and those of the heart, eye, brain, and respiratory system?  Researchers have demonstrated that human intention can affect a variety of other living systems such as bacteria, mice, cats, and dogs and even the direction in which fish swim.

Quantum physics has proven that living things are constant transmitters and receivers of measurable energy.  Thoughts are bundles of electromagnetic energy, and new models of consciousness depict it as being able to move beyond physical boundaries like energy.

“Intention appears to be something akin to a tuning fork, causing the tuning forks of other things in the universe to resonate at the same frequency,” McTaggart writes.

Wild! Huh?  These findings totally go against the definition of reality that most of us grew up with, including me – but what if it IS true?

Thoughts are not magic (unfortunately)

Such evidence is the basis for some belief systems made popular by The Law of Attraction (LOA) and The Secret.  All too often, this concept has been exploited promising anyone that they can get rich and famous, find the person of their dreams, or get skinny instantly and effortlessly just by thinking the right thoughts.  All you have to do is visualize it and *POOF* like a universal vending machine.  It’s not quite that simple or direct.

However, let’s assume for a minute that there is some truth to the concept. If you are constantly thinking about how you don’t have enough money and all the bills piling up, how do you think these thoughts are going to influence your reality if they do even a little bit?   If you worry unrelentingly about getting cancer and freak out at every little thing, what kind of energy are these thoughts emitting and subjecting your body to?

Conversely, if money is tight, but you focus on your competence and the abundance that’s present in your life otherwise, how’s this going to influence your reality?

Worry has become seen as normal, responsible, and mature.  In my own experience, not worrying felt so foreign to me at first I felt like I was deluding myself and being irresponsible. Now, I’m not advocating anyone carelessly throw caution to the wind and totally ignore possible consequences, just don’t dwell on and feed the negative ones. Make a point to give your thoughts and energy to the positive possibilities.  It’s just as easy.   Besides maybe affecting the outcome, focusing on the positive makes the experience much more pleasant as you go through it.

My intention experiment

Recently, I sold my house and moved.  While going through the process, I visualized the transition being smooth and easy which it was for the most part. In a depressed real estate market, my house sold in just 4 days!  This good fortune, however, posed a challenge as I had no idea where I was going to move.  The buyers offered to let me rent the house back from them for several months before moving. Perfect.

Remember the Staples “easy button” that was a central part of their marketing campaign years ago?   Upon pressing the big red “easy” button, a synthesized voice said, “That was easy.”  Before the for sale sign even went in the yard, I envisioned pressing that button after the move and feeling a big sigh of relief along with it.

Try conducting your own intention experiment with something in your life.  It can’t hurt!

I love the Yoda comment – it says it all. The Power of Positive Thinking was the mantra when I was a young girl. Recent research has backed up what some have known for years – thoughts can influence reality.

Great to have science confirm what we have seen at work all around us in life all along. I am gonna be like Yoda…thinking and creating positive things! The force is with me!

Great points. Change your thinking, get rid of stress and worry. Create an intention and then you can use this incredible power to affect your life in the way you want it. Can’t just wish and hope or as most people try to use it beg.

Yes, it is very powerful once realized. Great stuff! It has made all the difference in my outlook and in my life. Can be the same for anyone. Thanks for helping me learn this!

Debbie, this is just too funny. This morning, about a half hour before I checked e-mail and clicked through to this post, I was rereading parts of The Intention Experiment! Can you say nonlocal effect and thought connection? 🙂

You are so right about law of attraction being oversimplified. It’s been “dumbed down” to the point where people are only getting parts of the concept and not the whole thing. So they try to “use” it and don’t see results and then say it “doesn’t work.” I’ve been there.

But saying law of attraction doesn’t work is like saying electromagnetic energy doesn’t work. Of course it works. It’s just that we can’t always capitalize on it. When we become adept at thought focus, as you have, we really can use intention to create a virtual easy button as you describe.

We are doing our own intention experiment! Luv it!

I think you bring out a good point. People find it does not work to get rich quick or some other superficiality and trash it. Maybe that is the lesson….maybe we should be focusing on other things.

This has really taught me patience. I have found I have to continue to believe and put in the effort – even when it looks like it is in vain. The positive aspect may not look like I expected or come when I wanted it. This is where the believe part comes in.

  4. Hi Debbie. Another great post. I am a student of the Law of Attraction and more particularly Wallace D Wattles and Napoleon Hill. Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find but only if you knock on the door – which for me means to take action. You will only reap what you sow, after all. I believe in this absolutely, just a pity that there is sometimes too much hype and suggestions of (lazy) get quick rich solutions. Take care. Stephen

Stephen, thanks for stopping by! Never heard of Wallace D. Wattles or Napoleon Hill. Will look them up.

I totally agree. You have to take action. It is an essential component to this equation. There is no getting around the necessary effort. This is the most important place to put the positive intentions to work for you!

  5. Debbie,
This is fascinating. I love the news from this area of scientific research. I think our beliefs about the world will look quite different in a hundred years? Our thoughts are powerful indeed – this is a basic tenet of ancient wisdom. Like you though, I think the law of attraction does not adequately address the complexity of cause and effect. Thanks for another thought-provoking article.

  6. Hi Debbie,
I agree with Ande “dumbed down.” Even the LOA guru’s see a sucker is born every minute. They use slick advertising to sell the idea that one can have everything they want. Not! There would be no bald men in the world if that were true. Anyway thanks for the input. I like Lynn’s ideas and thoughts.

    • Debbie Hampton Reply

Oh, if it were only that easy. There would be no bald men…or women for that matter :). We would all be living the life of our dreams.

However, I shudder to think of what our character would be like. There is learning, growth, and substance in the process. That is why, I believe, it is set up the way it is.

  7. Hi Debbie, I agree with Ande and Tess that the LOA has been dumbed down by too many gurus looking for a quick buck. That’s a shame because it really does work. For me, if you want to seriously understand The Secret and LOA then really get to grips with Wallace D Wattles 1910 book, The Science of Growing Rich, which is now in the public domain. I thoroughly recommend it together with Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich and James Allen’s As A Man Thinketh. Forget the hype, it will all become so much clearer when you read and understand (and practice) these early 20th century masterpieces. Take care. Stephen

Me too! It is on my desk right now. When I was going through the process of getting my house ready to sell and find somewhere to move, I visualized me at the end of the whole process pressing the Easy Button and really feeling it. My house sold in 4 days in a horrendous market, and I found somewhere to move…no problem. Everything was…well.. super EASY!

  9. The Law of Attraction and the Secret are a beginning; but if you consider that 95% of your brain processing is sub-conscious it is easy to see why they don’t work “super EASY” – as they only target 5% of your thinking. Your subconscious beliefs and values run the show and that is the level you need to work on. Check out the stickman concept – Dr Thurman Fleet started it out – it’s become cognitive behavioural therapy. Bob Proctor does a great talk on the stickman and paradigms on YouTube.

  10. Thanks once again for a great article and good start of this day.

  11. “…Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” A quote from The Bible, New Testament, John 20:28-30 Jesus Christ knew more than a little something about the miracle of the human mind. All things are a process, flexing and developing belief through trial and error. It doesn’t always come easy – then again most things that are worthwhile require persistence!

    • Debbie Hampton Reply

Thank you for sharing the quote, Mary. I was not aware of it. So appropriate! 🙂
